Update on the Bees | 22nd May 2025 | Post 4 part 2

  • By The Co-Treetment Team
  • On May 22, 2025

So here we are now at post 4 part 2, following the ones from 9th March, 4th April, 10th April and 22nd May. Unfortunately life with bees isn’t a linear one; hence the variety of dates and times used. But thankfully thanks to the iPhone we can catch these fantastic events on video.

As ever it’s all with gratitude to Lisa McKenzie who is keeping the Co-Treetment team updated from her visits to the field in Thringstone, where our apiary resides.

So across the way from where Lisa McKenzie had spotted swarm number 1, there was swarm number 2. A bit smaller this time, but worthy of further investigation.

It’s likely to have a Queen, and indeed with the power of zoom, Lisa found her; not only did she find her she was able to identify her as ours, one that had escaped – 21 seconds in and there she is; the Queen. Lisa was able to capture the Queen in a specially designed Queen trap (who knew), which you can view at 50 seconds in the attached video. Popping the Queen into a 3rd nuc meant the bees would follow her into it.

With that in mind, the swarm was moved to our one remaining nuc, the others were at the time being cleaned. It was locally manufactured by a now retired beekeeper and whilst it was a bit shoddy, the nuc was very useful.

And there it is, post 4 part 2, a Queen returned to a nuc with her followers joining her.

As is typical for us, we are once again talking about the beauty of bees, how they are doing, and what the future for our apiary is. We are so excited!

We find it very interesting, and hopefully you will as well.
