With now 4,500 trees planted in the ground at our location near Thringstone in Leicestershire, we have recognised that we have to step up our care of them, in particular the newly planted improve their chances of survival.
Once a tree is in the ground, it needs looking after, maintaining and regular care. Without it they can easily be lost. Year on year our survival rates have got better and better – leading to over 93% of trees these days making it, a big improvement from our first year when the number was closer to 75%.
So on Sunday 24th we went to the field to primarily maintain the grass between our memorial trees, straighten up the canes and angled trees whilst ensuring areas that impinge on the trees growth, were minimised.
Of course we had to check in with the new apiary – 3 hives from the 4 we started with remain – we will review that in a separate post which we believe our followers will find informative.
We are delighted with the progress of our trees in the field. Our 2020 ones now top out at around 18ft, and as we come forward towards the entrance gate we see 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 trees in their various phases of growth. This to us at Co-Treetment tells a strategic story; the planted 4 years old trees are progressing well, they too started as whips, 2021 are next in height, and so on as the years show.
Hence like any company out there, you have to allow things to mature and grow; don’t be too hasty and remove or change direction – we actually had some trees we thought weren’t progressing well, we’d contemplating replacing them but decided to keep them. Those 2021 trees are now doing well, strong and standing tall.
Proof that it can take some tactics longer to come to fruition, and if you change direction too quickly you can waste a lot of time and money!
We now have enough trees in the ground to cover the orders we are anticipating during 2024; and we are continuing to support our nominated charity, Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre.
